We've become so accustomed to testing our DNA that it was only a matter of time before we tested our pets as well. Man’s best friend should receive all the same benefits that man receives, shouldn't he?
Dog DNA tests are conducted for a different purpose than human DNA testing, which is usually done to discover more about your family history and ancestry. A dog DNA testing kit's primary purpose is to determine what breeds your mutt contains in its genetic makeup. To be perfectly honest, there's a question that's been bothering dog owners and guardians for a while, but it's not that important in the end. Mixed-race mutts have fewer genetic problems than purebred dogs because they lack inbreeding.
The importance of another goal is often overlooked, however. Dog DNA tests are not only able to identify genetic diseases, but they can also detect genetic mutations. You should be aware that your dog may carry one of these diseases or develop a full-blown disorder. This can be ruled out by DNA tests - or diseases can be exposed before they spread.
