Flea & Tick Treatments Online

Fleas and ticks thrive in the soft, warm fur of your dogs. Pets can suffer from allergic reactions to serious illnesses from these insects, which feed on their blood. These little freeloaders not only itch, irritate and make your dog miserable - but they may also infect you. During the warmer months, fleas and ticks are more common but there are ways to keep them at bay.

Fleas

There are some people who suffer from an allergic reaction to flea bites, and scratching can result in skin infections. Fleas like human blood too, and they can jump from your pet's fur or bedding onto you. Some flea eggs can fall off your pet's coat and hatch on your carpet, bed, or other furniture. You and your pet are then targeted by the second batch of fleas, which feed on your blood and lay more eggs. You can make your home less flea-friendly by replacing carpets and keeping your house as dry as possible.

Ticks

Dogs will often pick up ticks while walking in high grass or in the woods during spring, summer, and fall. Ticks latch onto tall grass and shrubs waiting for a host to feed on. They can live without feeding for up to a year.

Ticks can be felt and seen on your dog when you pet them. The head, neck, paws, ears, and neck are the most common places they attach. Make sure you remove any ticks you find on your pet as soon as possible, as they can carry diseases.

Australia has three types of ticks:

  • Paralysis Ticks - Adult female paralysis ticks are the only ones capable of causing paralysis. The tick secretes numerous toxins as it feeds on blood. One is a neurotoxin capable of paralysing the body and respiratory muscles, affecting the swallowing process.

  • Brown ticks - When attached in large numbers, brown dog ticks can cause skin irritation and can make dogs anemic from excessive blood loss. Dogs are their primary host, although they will bite humans if dogs are not present.

  • Bush ticks - these ticks can irritate your dog’s skin and may carry potentially deadly diseases when they bite.

Regular flea and tick treatment is vital to keeping your dog healthy. If your dog is infested with fleas or ticks, it can transmit these nasties to you and other pets as well. Thankfully, Dr Carl carries a wide range of flea and tick control products that will help you get rid of these parasites.

The flea and tick products we offer are suitable for dogs of all breeds and sizes. Choose a product according to your dog's breed, age, and weight, as not all products are suitable for all dogs. A flea and tick preventative can be given to puppies at 8 weeks of age and weighing as little as 1.25 kilograms. We recommend starting your dog at a young age. In regions where paralysis ticks are known to inhabit, dogs should be treated regularly and checked frequently for fleas and ticks.

You can treat your pet with spot-on solutions, oral medication, collars, shampoos, and sprays. If your pet already has fleas or ticks, find a product that kills both adult fleas and ticks and their larvae.

Among the brands we carry are Nexgard Spectra, Advocate, Simparica Trio, and Bravecto to name a few.

How often do dogs need to be treated for fleas and ticks?

In Australia, ticks and fleas are widespread, so most dogs will encounter them at some point in their lives. Monthly flea treatment for all dogs, regardless of their age, breed, or weight depends on the product and its specifications. Using a preventative flea and tick treatment for dogs is an easy and effective way to break the life cycle and eliminate the risk of infestation.

How can I choose the best flea and tick medicines for my dog?

Ideally, dogs should be treated with products that provide continuous protection. Look for products that are easy to administer, such as long-acting topical or oral flea control products, with tick, heartworm, or parasite protection.

Which flea and tick control methods do vets recommend for dogs?

Many veterinarians recommend flea tablets for dogs along with all-in-one products that prevent paralysis ticks, brown ticks, and bush ticks. The products available here at Dr Carl kill fleas and ticks quickly so there is less chance of your dog getting sick or paralyzed.
