What Not To Feed Your Pets This Thanksgiving

Say No To Bread Dough

Say no to the dough! Raw bread dough has the ability to rise, even when ingested. This may cause bloating, abdominal pain, and vomiting, which can lead to life-threatening issues and may send your pet straight to emergency surgery.

Keep Them Away From Cake

If you are baking your own Thanksgiving cake, never offer any to your pets. Like bread dough, the mixture may cause bloating and stomach upsets, even the chance of life-threatening organ rupture.

In addition to this, if the mixture contains raw eggs, the eggs themselves may cause food poisoning in pets. Don’t feed them baked goods either.

No Eggnog Ever (or Alcohol)

Although a fan-favorite drink, eggnog should never be given to your pets. Eggnog contains eggs (potential food poisoning), milk (may upset dogs with an intolerance to lactose), and alcohol (has the same detrimental effect on dogs as it does on humans). Don’t do it.

Skip The Turkey (or any under-cooked meat)

Be wary about what meat you feed your pet. If you do decide to give your pet a sliver of turkey, make sure that is well-cooked. Under-cooked or raw meat may contain salmonella bacteria, which can cause stomach upsets and food poisoning.

As a side note – don’t feed your pet turkey skin, bones, or stuffing. Turkey stuffing in particular has heaps of nasties including herbs, spices, onion, garlic, and other ingredients which can be toxic and dangerous to your pets.

Don’t Let Your Pet Overindulge

It is easy to let go and indulge your pet with heaps of food and treats during the holiday season – however, it’s really important to keep your pet on a stable and consistent diet that is healthy for them. Of course, the healthiest food you can get for your pet is pet food, which is specially designed to suit the nutritional needs of cats and dogs.
