ParaGard will protect your cat or dog from intestinal worms, so you can keep your pet AND your family healthy!

Our pets are an important part of our family - we love our fur-babies!  But did you know that you could be sharing more than cuddles with your pet - you might also be sharing intestinal worms with them?  Yuck!

Worm infestations can have terrible side effects - avoid these by giving your pet ParaGard. It is important for the health of your pet and the health of your family that you treat your cat and dog for intestinal worms - even pets that never go outside can have intestinal worms, and these parasites can make your cat or dog sick, as well as making your family unwell.

What do I need to know about intestinal worms?

As the name suggests, intestinal worms are parasites that live in your cat or dog’s intestines and feed on your pet’s blood or other nutrients in the intestines.  The worms can cause diseases that can cause irritation, discomfort or even death in some pets, particularly in old or young pets or pets with underlying health issues.

Even pets that never go outside can get worms - they can be ingested if the worms or eggs are walked into the floor of your home, or could enter your pet’s body when your cat or dog eats an infected animal such as a flea, lizard or other wildlife. (Studies show cats eat up to 50% of fleas they find on their bodies during grooming.)  Young animals may have contracted intestinal worms from their mother - the infection can occur in the womb or from the mother’s milk.

Basically, if you have a pet, and you’re not treating them to kill intestinal worms, then it is likely that your cat or dog has intestinal worms!

The most common worms in cats and dogs are:

  1. Hookworms - by sucking the blood from the intestinal lining, hookworms cause anaemia, diarrhoea and weight loss in cats and dogs. They are a health risk to humans.
  2. Roundworms cause diarrhoea, stunted growth, lung damage, bacterial pneumonia and can be fatal to your pet. They also pose a health risk to humans.
  3. Whipworms live in the large intestine. It is transmitted when an animal eats infected faeces and can cause weight loss, anaemia and bloody diarrhoea.
  4. Tapeworm can cause diarrhoea, poor coat quality, irritability, or lethargy. Pets contract flea tapeworm from ingesting infested fleas, usually when they are grooming. Humans can get tapeworms from their pets, and young children who pet or kiss their pets are more at risk.  Hydatid tapeworms are contracted by your pet when your cat or dog eats infected raw meat or offal - these tapeworms can then be transmitted to humans with significant human health implications, including large cysts in vital organs like your liver, lungs and brain.

Why choose ParaGard for my dog or cat?

ParaGard treats and kills intestinal worms (hookworms, roundworms, whipworms and tapeworms). It’s a great wormer to use for your pet, especially if your pet is already protected against heartworm with another product (say, an annual heartworm injection), so you don’t need the added protection against heartworm in your worming product. This means you can ensure your pet is protected against the full range of parasites in the best (and cheapest) way!

The active ingredients of ParaGard are praziquantel and oxibendazole. Both of these ingredients work to destroy the nervous system of the parasite, paralysing it and killing it.

ParaGard is often used for breeding cats (queens) and dogs (bitches) to prevent transmission from mother to baby, and to treat little kittens and puppies - it can be used from 2 weeks of age, with the general rule that kittens and puppies are wormed at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks of age and then every month until they are 6 months of age. After this they are wormed every 3 months or as advised by a veterinarian.

The side effects of ParaGard Allwormer are very rare at the recommended dosage. Paragard has a wide margin of safety for all sizes and breeds of dogs.
