Virbac Tapewormer Packshot with German Shepard Dog Dr Carl

Do I need to treat tapeworms in my pet?

Did you know that all cats and dogs should be treated for tapeworms, to protect both the furry members of your family and the humans too!  Luckily, at Dr Carl, we know worms (including tapeworms) and how to protect your pet against these dangerous parasites.

Worms (intestinal worms and heartworm) can make your dog or cat very sick - or even kill them! Some of these parasites are zoonotic - that is, they can also spread from the pet to humans! You need to make sure that your pets have protection against the full spectrum of intestinal worms, as well as heartworms, to protect not only your dogs and cats, but you and your family.  This includes treating your pet to protect against tapeworms.

These are the four types of intestinal worms most common in Australia:

  1. Hookworms, which suck blood from the intestinal lining, causing anaemia, diarrhoea and weight loss in pets. They pose a health risk to humans.
  2. Roundworms live in the small intestine. They can cause diarrhoea, stunted growth, lung damage, bacterial pneumonia and possible death. They also pose a health risk to humans.
  3. Whipworms live in the large intestine. Infection is via faecal-oral transmission and more likely to occur where pets either live or play together. Whipworms can cause weight loss, anaemia and bloody diarrhoea.
  4. Tapeworm can cause a shaggy coat, irritability, diarrhoea or lethargy. There are two types of tapeworms - cats and dogs contract flea tapeworm from ingesting infested fleas, usually when they are grooming.Hydatid tapeworms are contracted by eating infected raw meat or offal.  Hydatid tapeworms have significant human health implications, and leads to the development of painful cysts in humans, which must be surgically removed.

In addition, dogs and cats can contract Heartworms - these are caused by a single bite from an infected mosquito, and can cause serious (often fatal) heart disease in cats and dogs.

There are lots of different products on the market that treat intestinal worms and heartworms in dogs and cats - and it can be confusing to decide what product your pet needs.  It is important that you know that there is not currently any product on the market in Australia that treats fleas AND ticks AND heartworm AND all intestinal worms - you need to use a combination of products to give your dog or cat full protection from parasites.

Even if you’re using a great product like Nexgard Spectra, Revolution, Advocate or Simparica Trio, you may not have given your dog or cat protection against tapeworms.  You can easily fill this “gap” in your pet’s worming regime by giving them a Virbac Tapewormer tablet.

The Virbac Tapewormer tablet is given to cats or dogs every 3 months (every 6 weeks, if your dog lives in an area where hydatid tapeworms are prevalent).  You can give your pet this tablet from 3 months of age, and it is safe for breeding females (who should be treated prior to mating, a week before giving birth and thereafter every three months).

Virbac Tapewormer can be given to your pet, crushed in their food or administered whole (or, in the case of our dogs, wrapped in a little piece of roast chicken)!

There’s a ratio of how many tablets are needed, depending on the weight of your cat or dog, and the tablets are scored so you can easily break them in half, as needed:
